Book Review: Strange Familiars (The Seamere College Duology Book 1) by Keshe Chow

Strange Familiars (The Seamere College Duology Book 1)
by Keshe Chow
May 19, 2026
Two scholars of magical veterinary science must put aside their lust and loathing to save the world in the first installment of this whimsical, romantic, dark academia duology.

All Gwendolynne Chan needs is to get through final year at Seamere College, where she is on track to graduate as number one —as long as the pretentious prat Harrisford Briggs doesn’t beat her to it.

Harrisford Briggs’s father, the chief financial officer of Magecorp, a major global distributor of magic, expects him to come top of the class. Harrisford, though, can’t help but notice that his father has been acting odd. And there are strange whisperings, too, of uncontrollable surges of excess magic.

Amazon

When these magical surges begin to rock London, causing chaos and explosions and animal familiars going feral, Gwen and Harrisford find themselves reluctantly involved, putting both of their veterinary careers at risk.

Along with Gwen’s snarky cat familiar, Gwen and Harrisford must team up to diagnose the problem. But as the two academic rivals fight their burgeoning feelings, they quickly realize that magic is not the only thing surging.

Strange Familiars by Keshe Chow is book 1 in a new magical series that feels like an adult Harry Potter world. Certainly not to the level of Potter (I can't say Potter unless doing it Alan Rickman style), but wizarding world abounds.

Love me some magics and all the wizarding world that flies around the night, with or without the broomsticks. Magic is and can be fun; this one is a fun whodunit story. A mystery in the world of the witching and the animals they love going a bit bonkers.

It's not a hard-hitting, action-packed bloodbath, but it's a fun romantic story of adult magic and certainly a well-thought-out mystery. Lots of follow-up books can come after this one. The author does a fantastic job laying down little breadcrumbs for more stories in the series.

Enjoyed this one, and it's a change of pace from my usual blood-and-guts vampire stories.

4.5 Sheep Book Review: A Fated Reckoning: An Epic Fae and Vampire Romantasy Standalone by Jamye Smith

A Fated Reckoning: An Epic Fae and Vampire Romantasy Standalone
by Jamye Smith
June 24, 2026
🌟 EPIC FANTASY WORLD: Multi-species cast (pixies, ice dragons, siren priestesses, beasts) - Post-war landscape - Magical Wastelands - Political intrigue
📖 FORMAT: Complete standalone with HEA - No cliffhanger - First Person POV

I loved him once. Now I cling to the hate, currently measured in the inches of steel I've driven into his chest.

Two centuries ago, Mikael didn't just break my heart - he shattered us. The vampire I trusted above all others betrayed me and ignited a war that left our people in ruins. To end the slaughter, I bargained with the Fates and drained the land of magic, and broke myself in ways time can't mend. What survived was a fae warrior turned city ruler, burying her past beneath liquor, duty, and the bond I severed.

When Mikael returns, alive when he shouldn't be, I do what any rational woman would: stab him in the heart.

But death isn't on the table for him. He's come back with a confession, and a curse - the amulet he stole came with a price. The one you love most will die.

My soul has fractured into four pieces. To break the curse before it kills me, we must recover each fragment. Riddles sear themselves into our skin, igniting with every touch - skin to skin, bond to bond - dragging us into the closeness I swore never to endure again.

As the curse frays, so does the magic suppressing our bond, unraveling every feeling I've spent two centuries trying to destroy. Each fragment recovered cracks the walls I've built wider, revealing truths I buried beneath denial and rage.

When the final riddle is solved, I'll face the cruelest truth of all: breaking the curse may cost me the person I love most.

I'm terrified it's still him.

CONTENT WARNINGS:
Violence - War trauma - On-page character death - Explicit sexual content - Grief - Betrayal - Blood - Torture (off-page) - Themes of sacrifice and loss

This is Book 1 in an interconnected series of standalones featuring different couples in the world of Eidrfall. Each book has a complete HEA and can be read alone, but characters appear across stories

Amazon

A Fated Reckoning: An Epic Fae and Vampire Romantasy Standalone by Jamye Smith is a very delightful vampire/Fae romance. I love it when the Fae and my Vampires get together, in all the ways!

This story really is a true standalone, you can read it and enjoy it for all that it is. Tons of romance and so much spice at times I was having a dang hot flash! Certainly not for the faint of heart.

Talk about an adventure! Seemed like one long fun quest that takes the reader all over the world created. Having two people who love/hate each other and are forced to touch because of this curse! I can't even imagine, but didn't need to since you get all the drama here.

Loved the back and forth dialog between our leading couple. What a fun all around story for anyone who loves a good fantasy with action and romance!

by Debbie Cassidy
April 4, 2026
The road to freedom is a river of blood.

I was tricked. Betrayed. And now the primordial evil has the throne. The asura and my closest friends are in his control, and the sky world is in lockdown with me trapped outside of it.

Only the deva can stop him now, but the key to summoning them is inside the royal domain. Someone needs to activate it. That someone will have to be me.

But the power he wields is immense, and his true goal is a mystery that I don’t have time to unravel.

I need allies.

I need an army.

And I need a way back into the royal domain.

My task feels impossible, but with the help of a few unexpected allies I might just be able to pull it off.

The primordial evil stole my throne, my people, and the man I love.

I plan to get them back starting with my Araz.

By the time I'm done, evil will tremble at the sound of my name.

Join Leela and Araz in the final thrilling instalment of the Labyrinth of Gods.

Amazon

Wrathful and Avenging Gods (Labyrinth of Gods Book 4) is the final book in a romantasy series by Debbie Cassidy. The book takes off right from where I assume the last installment left off. It was tricky to follow at times without the backstory, but it does get high marks for being so much fun!

I was lost from the start, but hung in there until the pages started to take flight and the characters really dug in. It would have been a good idea to start at book 1, but this was the review copy I got and so there ya go!

TONS of action and adventure, loved all the different takes of good vs evil and reading the characters as they overcome some hard obstacles. Things don't go as planned for sure, but the story never felt forced or rushed.

Overall, I really liked this one and maybe a spin-off from this point could be in the works. But start this series at book 1, just so you can enjoy it fully!

Book Review: A Crime Through Time (Miss Darcy Investigates Book 1) by Amelia Blackwell

A Crime Through Time: The Pride and Prejudice Mystery With A Time Travel Twist (Miss Darcy Investigates Book 1)
by Amelia Blackwell
July 10, 2025
Pemberley,
1799. When Miss Georgiana Darcy attempts to escape an unwanted marriage proposal, she isn’t expecting to end up quite so far from home. But after encountering a mysterious object in the nearby woods, she finds herself transported almost two hundred years into the future.

Saltram, 1995. At a grand country house where a film crew are busy shooting the latest Jane Austen adaptation, a terrible crime has been committed. And Miss Darcy – newly arrived, impeccably dressed and thoroughly confused – is the only witness.

It soon becomes clear that, somehow, Georgiana was meant to solve this riddle. With the help of a distractingly handsome Irishman named Quinn and a border collie named Watson, she sets out to stop the killer before they can strike again. But trouble is brewing back at Pemberley and time, it seems, is not on her side . . .

I really enjoyed reading the book- it was written in the 18th century style jargon and the late 1990's. You have to read it to really get the style and language. The story was witty and fast, and I liked the short paragraphs- you had a real understanding of the switching between the time frames- never got lost in nether land. I hope George and Quinn reunite. Love the note left at the end. All in all, I will read any of Ms. Blackwell's work. It was a very fast and enjoyable read.

I am looking forward to reading the next Miss Darcy Investigates- "The Haunting of a Bronte".

I give it 4.5 Baaarts, as I really enjoyed the original style of writing, but it may not be for everyone. But be sure to give it a chance if you come across a copy of the Miss Darcy Investigates series.

Book Review: A Death So Lovely (Kissed by Darkness Book 2) by Harper A. Brooks

A Death So Lovely: A Dark Vampire Romance (Kissed by Darkness Book 2)
by Harper A. Brooks
February 5, 2026
I never asked for this.

Lucian Vale stole my life when he gave me his blood. I should hate him for it, but now that I’m a vampire, every day is a battle between loathing him and wanting him. Between freedom and surrender. The pull to him is stronger than anything I’ve ever known.

At first, I despised what I had become—the hunger, the shadows, saying goodbye to my old life. But the more I fight it, the more it owns me.

The more he owns me.

Secrets at VMR run deeper than I imagined, and the answers I’ve been chasing are finally within reach. But Lucian’s past has returned with a vengeance, and an old rival is determined to drag us both into a war I’m not ready to face.

This time, Lucian can’t protect me from what’s coming. But I’m not scared.

Because with him, even death can be a lovely thing.

Amazon

A Death So Lovely by Harper A. Brooks is the latest edition in this ongoing spicy PNR. It's fast paced at under 200 pages and picks up right after book 1.

Since I did not read the first story, it was a little bit of "huh?" for me until I kinda got the idea of how the first story went down. This book is SPICY though, let me tell ya. Get a fan ready. Was there an actual story? I dunno, it got lost in the whole drama of who hates who and the mafia parts. Kind of threw me. A lot of "inner dialog" which was okay but maybe fleshing out the actual story line a tad more would have gone a long way.

This story came at one of those moments for me where the plot was second to the romance, bondage and attraction between our leading couple. There is of course a story line, I'm messing around some. But the main point of this one is vampire romance.

Hopefully the next installment will add more depth and characters development. I wanted to give this one a stronger rating, but it really is what it is at this point.

Book Review: Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel by Elizabeth Everett

Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel
by Elizabeth Everett
March 10, 2026
Genre: romantasy, witches
When a magical hotel appears smack-dab in the middle of the most unmagical of worlds, the last thing the residents expect is to fall in love.

Manager of the Number Five Wayside Inn and World Travel Hub, Pax Nomen has one of the easiest jobs in all the known universes, unless you count the occasional plumbing disaster. When Number Five Wayside gets stranded on a non-magical world, even Pax's trusty Wayside Handbook can’t help him. How is he going to “reboot” the hotel and keep it on its magical journey?

Josie LaChusia is a single mom experiencing debt, having parenting doubts, and tipping dangerously toward depression when an ad pops up on her phone that an apartment is available in a building she’s never seen before.

Pax needs a new guest to restart his hotel, and Josie needs a nudge to restart her life. In a building occupied by faeries, gargoyles, and a gnome with a bad attitude, two souls from very different places come together to create a home like no other.

Magic and Mischief at the Wayside Hotel by Elizabeth Everette is a magical and heartwarming tale rooted deeply in fantasy and fun. It's a softer tale of love and overcoming all the struggles life can toss your way.

The best word I could use to describe this one is "cozy," it is a light heartened book that doesn't have a larger world ending plot-line. It's focused
on the hotel life and all the magical and interesting people who live there. Including a vampire who loves doughnuts!

Some of the chapters felt a bit rushed, moving the story along a smidgen too fast and leading to an ending a bit unfulfilling. Could be a build up for a second story, just not sure. Our leading couple are cute to read about and have some warm moments, but this is not one on the graphic love making.

Overall, this one is sweet and has a very nice hug feeling. A bunch of humor and snark, which I loved!

Book Review: Aubrey Wants to Die by Pip Knight

Aubrey Wants to Die
by Pip Knight
March 3, 2026
"Sexy and laugh-out-loud funny, full of delicious drama and surprisingly moving – Aubrey’s chaotic undead rollercoaster of a journey had me cackling, yearning and questioning my entire existence." —Anna Downes, bestselling author of Red River Road

Love is hard. Being undead is harder ... Dolly Alderton meets True Blood in this dark, funny hell of a story

Aubrey is not what she seems. She's young, beautiful, romantic, obsessive and ... a vampire. All she wants is to be human again, and failing that, she wants to die. But the problem is, she can't. Not by stake through the heart or holy water or crucifix or garlic or fire. And she'd know, she's tried every method ... Twice.

So she's stuck here on this earth, all alone. Even the vampire who made her this way - an aristocratic douchebag called Oscar - has abandoned her.

But everything changes when one fateful night, she meets Jonathan. He's everything Aubrey's ever dreamed of, and what's more, he's her soulmate. Her Bella-Edward story. For the first time in 150 years, she has a reason to hope - eternal life might be bearable after all. So when Jonathan unexpectedly breaks up with her, she'll do anything to get him back.

But that's the exact moment Oscar swoops back into her life. And he has other plans for her. Soon, she's thrown into a world of glamour, glitter, blood and hedonism, a world that has her questioning everything she knows to be true-about life, but also about herself. A world where nothing is simple ... And no-one is safe, either.

Amazon

Aubrey Wants to Die by Pip Knight is the first installment in a new vampire romance. This one is certainly a vampire with a big twist and tons of adult Twilight vibes.

I love Twilight. I love True Blood. So, of course, I was sold on trying this one. So glad I did. It is freaking hysterical at so many points, our leading lady is FUNNY and snarky but not over the top. I love some comedy in a story. But you add in action, romance, and vampire lore, and this gal is enjoying every single page.

Sometimes you have to take hold of a lover and make them face their feelings of love and vulnerability. That's probably the nicest way I can explain what Aubrey is trying to do. Make the guy she loves understand he should love her back! Sounds kinda crazy, certainly is. Which just adds to the fun and non-stop writing in this.

I loved it, would read this again and again. But hopefully the author writes more stories with other characters and keeps this one undead for a long time!

Book Review: The Shop on Hidden Lane by Jayne Ann Krentz

The Shop on Hidden Lane
by Jayne Ann Krentz
January 6, 2026
Genre: Romantic Suspense
New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz dives into an enthralling new romantic suspense novel filled with deeply entrenched grudges, psychic dangers, and a conspiracy that threatens not only two families but also the entire paranormal community.

The Harper and the Wells families have regarded each other with deep suspicion for four generations. The Harpers have been known to offer their psychic talents for less-than-legal purposes, and the powerful Wells clan has a reputation for playing both sides of the street. But for all the years of history and distrust between them, there is a mysterious pact binding the two. They share the responsibility for protecting a long-buried and very dangerous secret.

Sophy Harper and Luke Wells are shocked to learn that her aunt and his uncle have been sleeping together—and now they are both missing. Not only that, but the last traces of them are at the scene of a murder soaked in negative paranormal energy. Clearly, someone is willing to kill to obtain the secret their families have been charged with protecting. Despite their mutual distrust, which, as far as Sophy is concerned extends to Luke’s hellhound of a dog, they both know that the terms of the pact must be honored.

Their investigation uncovers a psychic trail leading to a bizarre desert art colony where nothing is as it seems. But Luke and Sophy are concealing a few secrets, too. By a strange twist of fate, a Harper and a Wells have no choice but to trust each other and the fierce attraction that is binding them as surely as the pact between the families.

I've been watching reruns of a show my Mom loved, Physic. This story came along at the exact right time; it feels like we really needed a psychic detective to help these folks out. I loved that this story was delivered in a classic "who-done-it" style, but at the pace of all the modern-day paranormal lore I love.

If you like Clue or playing any type of detective game, you will enjoy this one. It could have used some more comedy at parts to just keep things light, but overall it was certainly enjoyable and had me sucked in till the very end.

Never felt like a fake or forced story, and that can be really tricky in this genre. By the end, I was ready for more! Worth a read on a lazy weekend.

Book Review: Road Trip with a Vampire (My Vampires) by Jenna Levine

Road Trip with a Vampire (My Vampires)
by Jenna Levine
September 23, 2025
AN INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

A vampire who can’t remember his past and a witch with secrets of her own hit the road in this zany, cross-country romantic comedy from beloved author Jenna Levine.

Reformed bad witch Grizelda “Zelda” Watson had hoped to never see another vampire again when she slipped away to sunny California for a fresh start. She'd grown tired of them and their nonsense ages ago. But when a vampire with amnesia unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep with a letter from her old friend Reggie, and asks for her help, she can’t say no. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Peter Elliott is tall and gorgeous, looks great in yoga shorts, and has the kind of dark hair and surly expression Zelda’s been a sucker for for hundreds of years.

Peter isn’t completely harmless—he is fanged, after all—but he’s harmless enough, and soon becomes the only person in Zelda’s new life who knows the truth about what she is. If she can help him decipher the cryptic notes in his journal, the only clues to his lost memories, she might as well try before sending him on his way.

But when an alarming message from Peter's past coincides with a clear sign that Zelda can't keep running from her own, they embark on a cross-country road trip for answers—only to find what they're looking for in each other.

Amazon

Road Trip with a Vampire by author Jenna Levine is certainly a fun rom-com with a vampire and not my usual read. Having a break from the hard-hitting action-packed adventure books was really fun!

I could almost feel the wind in my hair on this one. Loved the whole "road trip" aspect of the story. Made me want to jump in the car and just see what's out there! Maybe some vampires for me too!

A vampire with amnesia was interesting to read, with how experiences are all new again, breathing some undead life back into the bloodsucker. Enjoyed all the fun stops along the way and the folks they met out in the world. Restaurants that are freaking entertaining and food selections that I would sure try. At least once!

There's for sure a ton of adventure and twists as the story moves along, added to the heat that builds between our main couple. Loved this one for all the right reasons and look forward to reading the next installment!

Book Review: Atonement Sky (Psy-Changeling Trinity) by Nalini Singh

Atonement Sky (Psy-Changeling Trinity)
by Nalini Singh
Book 9 of 9: Psy-Changeling Trinity
July 15, 2025
The hunt for a stealthy predator takes a damaged J-Psy to the heart of falcon territory in this new Psy-Changeling Trinity novel from New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh…

Justice-Psy Eleri Dias knows the end is near for her, her mind one step away from fatal psychic exposure. In the short time that remains, she is determined to atone for an act of omission that has haunted her for a long, cruel decade. But that decision not only means facing a powerful changeling wing leader, but also putting herself in the path of a serial killer.

Falcon wing leader Adam Garrett is fiercely protective of his family and his clan. After losing his parents as a teenager in a shocking act of malice, Adam has no forgiveness in him for the J-Psy who betrayed him, betrayed them, at the most painful moment of his life. But the evil that stalks his territory will allow him no respite, forcing him once more into contact with the J he has never been able to forget.

Everything that could’ve been between Eleri and Adam was lost years ago, a shimmering promise crushed. As they work to uncover a monster, the moment of reckoning looms ever closer. Soon, there may be no more time left for either atonement...or love…

Atonement Sky: Psy-Changeling Trinity, Book 9 by author Nalini Singh is the latest edition in her ongoing epic PNR saga. There is no author like Singh and each installment just cements her as yet again, a freaking genious!

Why these books have not made it to movies is beyond me. They are beyond brilliant with so many characters seemingly real and tangible. Action packed and loaded to the brim with adventure in this one take the reader across the Psy world. We get a chance to meet some new characters and ones from previous books. I truly love how no character is left behind from previous books, you get to always check back in an see how they are doing.

TONS of spicy romance and some super erotic situations that just drip hotness right off the pages. This one burns so good!

I love all her stories and can't say enough just how much fun this author is. Has all the darkness I love and yet somehow could it go darker? Not for me to decide, but damn I live for this ride!

Chapter 1

"Some of us didn't make it, Sophie. We've accepted that. Our final goal is to create a better world for the next generation of the children we once were."

"No, I won't let you do this."

"You have no choice-to be a good leader, you have to implement triage, focus your energy on the ones who are salvageable. Leave the rest of us to do what we do best. We've bathed in evil . . . there's no washing that off, so we might as well use it to lure monstrous prey."

-Heated discussion between Eleri Dias (J Corps) and Sophia Russo
(director of the J Corps) (5 January 2084)

The road to Raintree, Arizona, was composed of sprawling desert and rippling walls of red-orange rock. Eleri was no geologist, had no idea whether the rock was shale or limestone or something else altogether. All she saw were natural formations that looked as if they'd been created by an expert sculptor, each ripple and gradation of color put delicately in place.

Where the rocks fell away, the desert glinted, the only signs of life in any direction scraggly bushes of a sandy green hue and the majestic forms of saguaro cactus plants, their arms akimbo at ninety-degree angles.

The sky was a searing blue, the landscape as arid and dry as Eleri's heart and mind. It seemed fitting that it would all end here, in this place devoid of the lush greenery so prevalent in the place where she'd taken her first breath too many shadow memories ago.

LIAR!!

That echo was as vicious today as the day it had been born, his voice having haunted her through all the years in between. And the further she drove into Raintree, the higher the likelihood that she'd come face-to-face with him . . . with the one person to whom she could never atone. There was no way to bring back the dead, and he'd taken care of the justice at which she'd failed.

Eleri. That's pretty. My name is Adam.

Her fingers flexed on the steering wheel, the wall of numbness in her mind a gift against the past. How much worse would it be if she could truly experience it, instead of looking at it from beyond a vast gulf of nothingness?

She hadn't shared her latest PsyMed test results with Sophia. They would have distressed her, and she was already in a physically vulnerable state, her pregnancy now at seven and a half months.

Poor Sophie.

Trying so hard to save all of them when that was an impossibility. And a terrible irony, because it had been Sophia's refusal to give up on her fellow Js that had led to her forcible elevation to Director of the J Corps.

Sophia was Ruling Coalition member Nikita Duncan's senior aide, and had no time to head a group of damaged telepaths who had once been overseen by the J Corps Management Board. But when the Ruling Coalition wiped out that board-after Sophia brought its mismanagement of the Corps to the Coalition's attention-and asked all working Js in the world to get together to nominate their new leadership, they'd come back with a single name: Sophia "Sophie" Russo.

They'd dropped the mess of the J Corps into Sophia's lap and trusted her to build a better long-term structure for them. She could've said no, but of course she hadn't. Because Sophie wanted not just life for all of them, but a life filled with joy and hope.

"Sophia's as tough as fucking nails, except when it comes to Js."

It was Bram who'd said that in the conversation group of four he'd set up almost eighteen years ago: the Quatro Cartel. Bram's little joke because the biggest case in the news at the time-when the four of them had been between nine and ten-had involved a ruthless drug cartel that liked to remove organs from people who owed them money, for no reason except that it was horrific torture.

"Perhaps we should follow that cartel's example, Bram," Saffron had said two months ago in her whisper of a voice, her throat still healing from her altercation with a murderer on a rampage. "Remove organs one by one, make our targets suffer."

No one had told her that would take her into sociopath territory. Fact was, none of them had the patience for such games of torture, especially not Saffron, with her violent rages and extreme temper. Regardless, they agreed with her in principle-after what they'd seen in the minds they'd wandered, Eleri and the rest of the cartel of four had no doubts about evil and what it deserved.

Quatro had begun as a secret because they'd been children at a strict boarding school who'd wanted a private way to talk. It was Yúzé who'd taken Bram's initial idea and used his tech skills to move the chat into a secure online room-Eleri didn't understand how he'd done it, but then tech had always been Yúzé's specialty. As a J, he'd been pulled near exclusively into cases that involved high-tech elements of murder.

Quatro remained secret for a far darker reason. All four of them had begun to work as active Js at the same time, give or take a month or two. And all four of them had crossed a final dividing line within weeks of each other, whether by chance or because of the cases they'd been assigned over the years-Bram, Eleri, Saffron, and Yúzé ranged from 8.9 to 9.5 on the Gradient; they'd never been given any nonviolent cases after they completed their apprenticeships.

Theirs had been the realm of serial and spree murderers.

The four of them weren't going to make it on either the psychic or psychological level.

"No point hiding from it," Bram had written four months ago after Yúzé turned Sensitive, the last one of the Cartel to do so. "All four of us now have shields so thin that we pick up thoughts through even minor touch-staving off Exposure is going to take a mammoth effort, if it's even possible."

Exposure would mean the total loss of their shields, the psychic noise of the world crushing them until they screamed and tore at themselves in a futile effort to make it stop. No J ever voluntarily reached Exposure-the members of the Corps knew to choose their own exit route instead of being at the mercy of others after they'd lost their ability to function.

Eleri could imagine no worse death than being a mindless creature who could neither defend herself nor understand the screaming voices inside her head that would never, ever stop.

"This," Bram had added, "remains what it's always been-our online home, but it's also now a place to share data about our rates of disintegration. Whichever one of us falls last, your task will be to compile that data and put it into Sophia's hands, in the hope it'll assist her in saving more J lives. For now, it'll help the four of us set our affairs in order-including ensuring any delayed justice."

Delayed justice.

Bram had a way of couching murder by Js in language that sounded almost harmless, but they all knew what he'd meant. Because though none of them had reached thirty, with Eleri and Yúzé just past twenty-seven and Bram and Saffron twenty-eight, they were all senior Js who had completed their final assigned cases.

While they technically remained Js in the system, with all the official access to information, their badges yet valid, it was understood that what time they had was their own; the four of them planned to use that time to correct mistakes in that system for which they'd been culpable-or which they hadn't been able to stop.

As part of their pact to share everything they could to help each other plan their unavoidable descent into the abyss, Eleri had posted her PsyMed results an hour after she'd received them: Predicted status change from Sensitive to Exposed now at six months.

"Fuck, Eleri." Saffron was angry in a way Eleri simply couldn't become any longer, their brains having reacted in diametrically opposing ways to repeated reconditionings.

Where Saffron screamed her rage, Eleri drowned in nothingness.

"Six months?" Saffron had picked up and thrown the object nearest to her-a water glass that had shattered into bright shards of sound. "Fuck!"

Because Eleri was the first of them to be given the Exposure diagnosis, she'd added further context: I retain full cognitive and physical function. However, I can't sleep for more than three hours at a stretch, and memories from retrievals early in my career have begun to surface at increasing speed.

Eleri was the canary in the coal mine now, hers the descent the others would watch in order to prepare for their own. The part of her that understood she'd once felt emotion on a deep level was glad that she could offer this gift to the people who had been her friends since the day she'd walked into class as a six-year-old child who'd been told she'd never again be going home.

Later, that same information might help others born far after the end of her own childhood.

"If the PsyMed specialists and empaths know what to watch for," Bram had said when talking about compiling the information on their descent into Sensitivity, then Exposure, to pass on to Sophia, "they might actually be able to head it off at the pass."

It'd be their second contribution to saving the J Corps. Their first had been to ensure Sophie became their leader-between the four of them, their network was labyrinthine and they'd put all their power behind the woman who was now their director.

That Sophie had a direct link to the Ruling Coalition was important, but they'd have disregarded that if she hadn't also had their trust. Sophie might work for Nikita Duncan, but she remained a J to her core, her determination to protect her fellow Js an elemental part of her nature.

A sense of movement in Eleri's peripheral vision.

Glancing out the window of her vehicle, she glimpsed a large bird wing lazily over the desert landscape, its upper feathers a deep gray with a bluish tone. On the underside were bands of white interspersed with black. Dark eyes, with feathers of a much darker hue under those eyes.

A peregrine falcon, an extraordinary aerial hunter with acute vision, and the majority type of falcon that made up the WindHaven clan. She'd researched them as much as she could before heading toward the town that had been linked to the predatory clan throughout known history-but the falcons were as reticent as most other changelings, and all she had was scraps.

This falcon kept easy pace with her as she passed the sign that marked the town boundary: Welcome to Raintree! Where the Canyons Are Vast and the Skies Endless. The background image was of a lush forested area nestled against a towering rock face painted in the colors of sunset.

The changeling winged away at that point-and she knew it had been a changeling from the size. Changeling birds were much larger than their natural counterparts-though not as much as they should have been given their size in human form. She'd found endless online threads talking about the mass differential in certain changeling species-many had theories, but none answers.

LIAR! It was no mistake!

Strokes of green began to color the landscape as she drove deeper into Raintree and into the echoes of the past. This far out, she saw only the odd sign of habitation. From her research, the town had natural access to a tributary of the Colorado River that caused it to be somewhat of an oasis in this arid region. She saw that firsthand when she came around the corner . . . and into a sudden explosion of dark green.

Raintree didn't quite fit in this landscape.

It was too fertile, too abundant. As if it had been plucked out of the Pacific Northwest and dropped into this landscape of desert browns and rust reds, an intruder that had decided to settle in for the long haul.

Shaking off the sense of wrongness but making note of it because it might be a sign of mental degradation, she lowered her speed. This seemed like the kind of place where children might run across roads while neighbors gossiped on corners.

Turned out she'd been a little too early in her caution; she didn't see any sign of true civilization until at least five minutes later. The houses that began to pop up at that point were small and neat, with well-maintained front yards, some of which had a number of desert rocks in them.

Greenery crawled over the rock, life defying the desert Eleri had just traversed.

But the green was no challenge to the soaring rock faces striated with orange and yellow, red and pink, that rose on either side of the town. They rippled like water, the rough surface appearing smooth as glass from this distance.

Raintree, she realized, was based inside a canyon that leaned in to shadow the town from both sides; the sunlight that reached Raintree would mostly be on either end of the day rather than in the blistering middle. Add in its proximity to water, and no wonder the town had such an unexpected microclimate.

Almost at a standstill on the road now, she looked up to the looming canyon wall to the left of the town and frowned. Either she was having vision issues or someone was standing high up on the side of the rock face.

A rock climber on a ledge?

Her vision wasn't sharp enough to make out details from so far out, but then she saw a pair of wings sweep out over the person on the ledge and sucked in a breath.

Falcons.

She understood now. They were linked to Raintree, but it wasn't their home. That sat high above the town. She should've realized that; why would winged changelings want to live on the ground when they could live in a nest in the sky?

Liar! You fucking liar!

Her hands tightened on the steering wheel, the renewed roar of the memory a thunderous force . . . as if it had gained strength from the sight of the lone falcon who stood so high above Raintree, his confidence apparent in his stance even from this distance.

Eleri. That's pretty. My name is Adam.

Chapter 2

Winged changelings, especially the raptors, are interesting in the most fascinating way. While their clans follow a similar internal structure to those of earthbound predatory packs like the wolves and bears, they have a unique culture built on the freedom extended by their wings

Book Review: Snoop Come Home: A parody by Jeff Whitcher

What Would Snoop Dogg Do in Charlie Brown’s World?
You’ve probably never wondered what it would be like if Snoop Dogg replaced Snoopy in the Peanuts universe—but once you read Snoop, Come Home, it’ll be all you can think about.

Snoop Come Home: A parody
by Jeff Whitcher
March 13, 2020
What if Snoopy blazed up, dropped a mixtape, and flipped the Peanuts universe on its head?

In Snoop, Come Home: A Parody, cartoonist Jeff Whitcher delivers a hilariously twisted tribute to childhood nostalgia, mixing Saturday morning innocence with Saturday night smoke. When the world’s chillest rapper lands in the suburbs of Schulz’s beloved gang, things get… hazy. From prescriptions signed by Dr. Dre to neighborhood girls interrogating gangsta rap lingo, no character escapes this riotous remix unscathed.

Illustrated in pitch-perfect Peanuts style, this grown-up picture book is a subversive celebration of hip hop, youth culture, and the strange, delightful ways we all mash up meaning. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of comic strips or a disciple of West Coast beats, this is your new favorite coffee table conversation starter.

Not for kids. Not for the faint of heart. But definitely for anyone who loves satire with a blunt edge.

A perfect gift for pop culture junkies, parody lovers, and anyone who’s ever wondered: “What would Snoop Dogg do in a Charlie Brown world?”

Amazon

Whitcher did it...he seamlessly replaced Snoopy with Snoop. Snoop interacts with all the classic Peanuts characters without them breaking character. It's silly and some (Gen Z and Millennials and Boomers) might think Why?

Snoop, Come Home is for my generation--the forgotten one--X. We understand because we are also a smash-up of childish nostalgia and irreverent humor.

This would be a fun gift for the Gen X'er in your life.

Book Review: Realm of Thieves (Thieves of Dragemor) by Karina Halle

Realm of Thieves (Thieves of Dragemor)
by Karina Halle
June 10, 2025
Genre: romantic fantasy, romantasy, dragons
Two thieves vie for dominance in the illegal dragon egg trade, putting both their lives and their hearts on the line in this scorching romantasy from New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle.

For Brynla Aihr, crime and survival have always gone hand in hand. Ever since she escaped the fanatical dragon-worshipping cult that controls her homeland, she’s had to carve out a life doing the unthinkable: stealing dragon eggs. Egg theft is illegal and, in most cases, fatal. To breach a dragon’s nest means a harrowing journey through the ancient wards spelled to keep the monstrous beasts confined. Dragons can’t get out and only those with a death wish can get in.

Despite the risks, dragon eggs are highly coveted for their magic. An illegal trade flourishes under competing criminal empires, and Brynla’s loyalty has always been to the highest bidder. Until she finds herself kidnapped and blackmailed by Lord Andor, a formidable lieutenant of House Kolbeck, and thrust into the dangerous political games of rivaling dynasties.

Brynla and Andor clash at every turn, sparking heat in ways Brynla’s never felt before. But in a world that’s prophesized to return to the dragons, and rife with betrayal and secrets at every turn…how close to the flames is she willing to stand?

Realm of Thieves by author Karina Halle is one heck of a heist story, with dragons!

Love me some dragons and love this adventure that takes the reader on one badass journey across a very colorful and exciting world. TONS of feelings in this one and loads of deep and thoughtful looks into some hard topics of mental health. Loved that the author was not afraid to go into those darker areas.

Action and adventure galore, and a "black sheep" son who I loved just alone for the reference to sheep baby!!!! Baaaaaa. What a ride, main characters who had me from hello, very engaging and both standing on their own but a couple was powerful. Hot, hot, hot romance that lite up the fire in any dragon.

Loved this one and can't wait for the next installment!

Book Review: Rebel in the Deep (Crimson Sails Book 3) by Katee Robert + excerpt

Rebel in the Deep (Crimson Sails Book 3)
by Katee Robert
May 20, 2025
Book 3 of 3: Crimson Sails
The rebellion’s fight turns into a battle of the heart in this pulse-pounding conclusion to the Crimson Sails trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Katee Robert.

Nox has been steadfastly working for the rebellion for years. They don’t ask for much in return, except for one crucial condition: their ex, the noble Bastian, stays as far away from them as possible. To say things ended poorly between them is an understatement . . . and it’s the only relationship Nox has never quite recovered from.

But now the rules have changed. Siobhan, the rebel leader, has emerged from hiding to tell Nox that Bastian’s been taken captive and the secrets he holds tight are in danger of being revealed. The fate of the entire rebellion now rests on Nox and Siobhan’s ability to rescue Bastian from a Cŵn Annwn ship.

Saving Bastian is only the start of their hardships, as the trio is tracked by ferocious pirates across Threshold. And Nox’s complicated relationships and entanglements with Bastian and Siobhan put not only their life at risk but their heart on the line.

Rebel in the Deep (Crimson Sails Book 3) by Katee Robert is the final instalment in this very exciting trilogy.

This set of stories is a very seaworthy type of action and adventure with, of course, all the paranormal monster elements and hot as hell romance. Some questionable heroes and a bit of pacing and timing had me jumping along pretty fast. It can be hard, at times, to keep up with the pace and fast-moving nature of this one.

Just stating a point. There are nonbinary pronouns used in these stories, which made no difference to me.

Could this book be read as a standalone? Maybe.... But I would say to read all 3 and enjoy the full ocean ride. Something is missed if you just cut right to the chase and dig in here. Plus, this gives the reader a chance to feel out the saga and really develop a deeper connection before the finale.

Lastly, I almost expected Johnny Depp to walk across the deck of this one in his full head-to-toe Captain Jack attire!

A fun story, that has some flaws, but overall was well worth the read.

chapter 1
Nox
Some days, I have to actually do my job. Those tend to be the bad days. The ones filled with violence and blood and a sorrow so thick, the entire crew can taste it on the air.

Today is shaping up to be a bad day.

"Hold it, Bowen," I snap. "If one of those tentacles makes it through your shield, we're in trouble."

"I am holding it," the man at my side grits out. He's easily a head and shoulders taller than me and twice as large, the muscles in his arms standing out in stark relief. He appears to be holding air, but it's just a physical representation of what his magic is doing.

Mainly: protecting my damn ship.

Another tentacle arches out of the sea and slaps down on the invisible barrier of Bowen's shield. Even with his deep well of power, he can't keep this up forever. Not when our primary shield already failed, which isn't something that's happened in the weeks since Evelyn has been aboard.

The woman herself crouches behind us, frantically trying to remake the circle that will re-create the shield. When I dare a glance at her, she's looking shaky and paler than normal, her skin waxen. She meets my gaze, green eyes wide. "Is it the kraken?"

"No. Krakens can be reasoned with. Everyone!" I lift my voice, injecting a boom that will make my crew snap to action. "Attack the tentacles. Bowen, drop the shield when I go over."

"Are you out of your fucking mind, Nox?"

It's not the first time I've been asked this. It won't be the last. I shrug out of my coat and drop it onto the deck next to me. If I've learned one thing, it's that when in doubt, it's best to brazen your way through. I don't have the same scale of power that Bowen does, but I have enough. "I would prefer a peaceful resolution, but this beastie isn't cooperating. I'll get it to the surface. You rip it to shreds."

His dark brows draw together. "How are you-"

"Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to, darling." I yank off my boots-even with magic, they're a pain to get salt water out of-and step onto the railing. "If I die tragically, remember me fondly."

"Nox, damn you!"

I dive over the edge before he can finish berating me. Bowen's got a paladin's sense of honor-which means he's a stick-in-the-mud-and he's always been reluctant to admit that sometimes it takes breaking the rules to come out on top. Since coming out on top of this current conflict means my crew lives and my ship stays intact, there's no room for negotiation.

The water welcomes me like an old friend, my magic rising beneath my skin in response to my intent. It's difficult to see with the beastie churning through the depths, bubbles and tentacles everywhere. That's fine. I've worked in worse conditions.

I pull a small funnel of air down to meet me and enclose my head, allowing me to breathe, and then cut down through the depths, propelled along by my water magic through the small hole Bowen opened in his shield for me. Most people have access to only one element, but I've never been like most people. I can wield all four.

The thing has twice as many tentacles as a kraken and is half as smart. Maybe not even that much. It completely ignores me weaving around its body in favor of trying to eat my ship.

Not today, darling.

I dip between two massive tentacles and stop short at the sight of its massive mouth. A mouth, not a beak, as if I needed further confirmation. Krakens can be reasoned with. If they grow to ship-killer size, they're old enough to know when faced with a fight they can't win. They prefer easier prey than humans anyway. There is plenty to hunt in the cold, dark depths that won't rip you to shreds.

I'm still a sap, though; instead of immediately attacking, I project my voice through the water toward it. "Stop attacking my ship!"

I already know it won't work, but it gets the beastie's attention on me. It opens its mouth wide, exposing row after row of razor-sharp teeth nearly as tall as I am.

Okay, then.

I shove my hands forward, propelling air from the funnel and into its mouth. More and more and more, the force of it preventing the beastie from shutting me out. "Too late, darling." My body shakes from the energy drain, but we're not done yet.

The air fills it like a balloon, sending it toward the surface even as it keeps trying to eat me. It can't seem to figure out why the distance between us is increasing, which further proves that it's pure animal-if one of a truly monstrous size. It doesn't mean it deserves to die simply for existing, but it's eaten four trade ships in the last four weeks and shows no sign of slowing down.

It swipes a tentacle at me, and I have to take the hit because all my magic is devoted into propelling it upward and keeping enough air around my mouth and nose so I don't drown.

It's like someone dropping a ship on me. The tip of the tentacle is thicker around than I am. It slaps me hard enough that I see stars. I lose my grip on the magic bringing air to me-but not the air to the beastie.

The Cŵn Annwn are the biggest monsters in Threshold, the realm that connects all realms in existence, but occasionally one of the beasties wreaking havoc does need to be put down. It's always tragic, but again, that's my ship and my crew and my world. I'm not going to let a beastie keep eating people.

One final desperate burst of power overloads its natural weight and creates enough buoyancy to send its form surging to the surface. My body shakes as I keep it going up and up and up. I can tell the moment Bowen's power takes hold. The weight against my magic disappears.

I exhale slowly and start swimming. I'm far enough from the surface that I have to be intentional about my ascent. Deep pressure does a world of damage to the human body if not managed correctly.

By the time I shoot from the surface and use the water to propel me back on board, it's raining blood.

"Bowen!" Evelyn crouches on the deck with her hands over her head. "Did you have to literally rip it apart?"

Bowen looks a little woozy, which is worrisome in a man that large. "Sit down before you fall down." I nudge him with my fingertips, and he stumbles a few steps to sink to his knees next to Evelyn.

The rest of the crew is looking just as dazed. We've fought mermaids and other ships and all sorts of creatures we can't talk down, but I've never seen the Audacity covered in this much blood. It matches our crimson sails. In fact, I'm the only one who isn't red and covered in gore.

Well, I'm captain for a reason. It falls on me to snap everyone back to reality. I spread my arms and slowly circle. "Well done, chaps. Callen. Gable." I snap my fingers at the two, who straighten to attention when I name them. "Get the deck cleaned up as much as you're able. The rest of you, see what we can harvest of the beast. Evelyn will get shower schedules set up."

We might have the magic of indoor plumbing in the pocket dimension inside the ship, but the resources aren't infinite. We'll have to make port soon so I can refill our freshwater stores.

I turn to find my quartermaster, Poet, holding my coat. It wasn't spared from the carnage, now several shades darker than its usual crimson and dripping the same gore covering everyone else. I sigh. "Well, it was about time for a new coat anyway."

Poet shakes her head, her long dark hair flinging blood. She's a tall woman with light brown skin and a thick body that means she can carry three barrels to every one of mine. "You don't need an excuse to add to your wardrobe."

She's not wrong. I grin. "It's true, but this excuse is better than most."

"I suppose it is." She neatly sidesteps a surge of water Gable guides across the deck, concentration on zir face. Callen is next, slightly overlapping with zir path.

I glance over to where Evelyn is tugging Bowen to his feet. It looks absurd for the big man to be leaning on his short, curvy woman, but she's stronger than she appears. She keeps them both on their feet. "Before I get the shower situation figured out, I need to help Bowen," Evelyn says.

"I'm fine," he murmurs. Except his dark eyes aren't quite focusing.

"You're really not," she says tartly. She doesn't look much steadier on her feet, but Evelyn would have to be dead to not run her mouth. It's what I like about her. She frowns at me. "You look terrible, too."

I'm not about to admit that I'm fighting to avoid weaving on my feet. I can channel more magic than most elemental users, but even I have limits. All of us reached them today.

But I'm the captain, and the captain can't show weakness.

I dredge up a roguish grin. "Keep talking sweet to me, and I'm going to have to challenge Bowen for your heart."

She rolls her eyes and Bowen mutters under his breath as she turns them toward the hatch leading belowdecks. Poet snorts. "You done playing hero? You need to be looked over."

"I'm fine." It's more or less the truth. My ribs ache, but my breathing is uninterrupted so nothing's horrifically broken. "Save Orchid's tender ministrations for those who actually need it." Our healer is a miracle worker, and he believes in the cause. We might all be serving the same purpose-to undermine the Cŵn Annwn and help the people and creatures who end up in Threshold by accidentally wandering through the wrong portal.

Poet sighs. "You'd tell me if you weren't."

"Of course I would," I lie. I want nothing more than to peel out of my wet shirt, but I suspect if I do so, Poet will come down with the vapors. There's sure to be a rainbow of bruises across my body. It's fine. I heal faster than most people.

The sea around the Audacity is red and chunky. Bowen might have been a captain at one point, but he's extremely good at following orders. Good enough that there's only carnage left of the beastie. I fight down a shudder.

This is Threshold and I sail under the banner of the Cŵn Annwn, for all that I find their policies loathsome. Each of their captains is a bigger monster than the next. It means I'm a monster-and Bowen, too. It's natural to wonder which of us would walk away if it came to a fight.

His telekinetic power is fearsome, but he's still human. He needs to breathe. The question is whether I could suffocate him before he tore me to pieces . . .

Cheery thoughts.

I motion to Poet. "Let's wrap this up. I hate the smell of gore."

A few months back, half the crew was killed in a hostile takeover-mine, notably-and we still haven't filled out our numbers. Even so, it only takes an hour before we're moving, cutting away from the frothing waters. The blood has summoned other predators, but they aren't our business.

I make the rounds, talking to my people, checking in, until I circle back to where Eyal stands at the helm. He's a tall, lean man with cool dark brown skin and blue locs-or he is normally; currently, he's the same shade as our sails.

Which means it'll be a bit longer before I can change out of these clothes. "You're going to undo all of Gable and Callen's hard work by dripping all over the newly clean deck. Go shower."

"Won't be time for that."

I narrow my eyes. "What are you on about?"

"We have company." He points, and I follow the motion to the horizon. I don't see anything, but that doesn't mean much. Eyal's got better eyes than most.

This day just got exponentially longer. "Trouble?"

"Hard to say." He squints. "Smaller vessel. White sails."

White sails don't mean much-the only ships that fly crimson sails are Cŵn Annwn warships. We're on the trading route between Drash and Three Sisters, so it might be a trader. Or smugglers. Neither fall within our purview.

Still, there's no reason to be foolish. I raise my voice. "Everyone, on alert. It's time to meet some new friends."

chapter 2

Nox

A thread of unease goes through me as we get close enough to pick out the details of the ship. It's easy enough because they're heading directly for the Audacity. They aren't attempting to pretend to do anything else.

"Orders?" Poet murmurs. She stands at my right shoulder.

I'm tired and itchy from the salt water drying on my skin, and I want nothing more than to get this over with, but that's just my impulsiveness talking. I know better than to listen to that voice. "Let's give them a nice warm welcome . . . at least until we know what they want."

Almost as soon as the words leave my lips, Gable yells from the bow. "It's Lizzie!"

"Lizzie?" I can't stop my shock. I thought for certain we'd seen the last of that murderous vampire. She ran off with Maeve ages ago. I fully expected her to find Maeve's stolen skin, retrieve her stolen family heirlooms, and then take a portal back to her world, never to return. She shouldn't be here.

Except she is. She stands at the bow of the small ship, her long dark hair trailing behind her in the wind of their passing. She's just as beautiful as the last time I saw her, but there's something looser in her body language. Interesting.

A second person joins her, and I stop thinking about the vampire altogether. Because I know this person, this woman. I know that tall frame and those broad shoulders, that tanned skin and handsome face.

Siobhan.

"Fuck," I breathe.

I haven't seen Siobhan in years. There was a time when she sailed more freely about, using her charm and smarts to convince more people to join the rebellion. But as our numbers increased, it became necessary to remove herself a bit, to protect herself. So she essentially went into hiding.

She should still be in hiding.

The fact that she's not is more than a little worrisome. I glance at Eyal. "Bring us close." --This text refers to the paperback edition.
